The Applied Software Engineering Research Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducts innovative basic and applied computer science research on challenges of national interest. The research focus is in the areas of intelligent agents, emergent behavior, pervasive computing, machine learning, information retrieval, and knowledge discovery.

Our focus is on leveraging our core technologies, expertise, and experience to solve challenging problems of national interest. We emphasize value and deliverables for a customer, often working in small teams of researcher and software engineers to produce solid, high-quality, and reliable results.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a multi-program science and technology laboratory managed for the U.S. Department of Energy by UT-Battelle, LLC. Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct basic and applied research and development to create scientific knowledge and technological solutions that strengthen the nation's leadership in key areas of science; increase the availability of clean, abundant energy; restore and protect the environment; and contribute to national security.

ORNL has 3800 staff of which 1500 are scientists and engineers. The annual budget is approximately $1 billion. The campus sits on a 58 square mile valley in the East Tennessee mountains a short drive from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
