The
42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-42)
Minitrack: Pervasive Computing Technology and Applications
Co-Chairs: Dr. Yu (Cathy) Jiao,
Dr. Thomas E. Potok, and Prof. Ali R. Hurson
Location: Big Island, Hawaii
Dates: January 5-8, 2009
Pervasive Computing brings about a new generation of
computing, where computers meld into the background of our lives.
The proliferation of new mobile devices that take advantage of
wireless communications, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs)
and smart phones, enables a new class of advanced software
applications that heightens the demand for distributed and
collaborative problem solving. As we venture into the realm of
Pervasive Computing, there are many questions that remain to be
answered. This workshop on "Pervasive Computing Technology and
Applications" aims to gather input and feedback through the
collection of high-quality contributions that reflect and advance
the state-of-the art of ubiquitous and pervasive application
systems. We invite submissions that address theoretical, technical,
and practical issues of Pervasive Computing.

2008 Performance Metrics for Intelligent
Systems (PerMIS’08) Workshop
General Chair:
Elena Messina, NIST Program Chair: Raj
Madhavan, ORNL/NIST
Location:
Washington DC, U.S.A.
Dates:
August 19-21, 2008
PerMIS'08 will be the eighth in the series that
started in 2000, targeted at defining measures and methodologies of
evaluating performance of intelligent systems. The workshop has
proved to be an excellent forum for discussions and partnerships,
dissemination of ideas, and future collaborations in an informal
setting. Attendees usually include researchers, graduate students,
practitioners from industry, academia, and government agencies.
PerMIS’08 aims at identifying and quantifying contributions of
functional intelligence towards achieving success. Our working
definition of functional intelligence is “the ability to act
appropriately in an uncertain environment, where appropriate action
is that which increases the probability of success”, and success is
“the achievement of behavioral goals” (J. Albus, 1991). In addition
to the main theme, as in previous years, the workshop will focus on
applications of performance measures to practical problems in
commercial, industrial, homeland security, and military
applications. More information is available from the workshop
website.

Quantitative Performance Evaluation of Navigation Solutions for Mobile Robots
Co-Chairs:
Raj Madhavan, Chris Scrapper, and Alex Kleiner
Location: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
Zurich, Switzerland
Dates: June 28th 2008
The development of adaptive and technically capable
mobile robots that are able to safely operate in unstructured,
dynamic environments is essential to the acceptance of robotic
technologies, permitting collaborative operations of man and
machine. Currently, there is no way to quantitatively measure the
performance of these systems against userdefined requirements; and
furthermore, there is no consensus on what objective evaluation
procedures need to be followed to deduce the performance of these
systems. The lack of reproducible and repeatable test methods have
precluded researchers working towards a common goal from exchanging
and communicating results, intercomparing robot performance, and
leveraging previous work that could otherwise avoid duplication and
expedite technology transfer from the "drawing board" to the field.
The primary focus of this workshop is to bring together what is
currently an amorphous research community to define standardized
methods for the quantitative evaluation of navigation solutions and
robotgenerated maps that will enable mobile robots to operate in
dynamic unstructured environments. This workshop will seek to
develop test methods to classify the performance characteristics of
navigation solutions that facilitate the intercomparison of
experimental results. It will also attempt to define a de facto
standard testbed for evaluation of navigation solutions that will
provide a baseline for comparison and will provide the mechanisms
targeting specific aspects of the system, allowing researchers to
assess the performance of various systems in different scenarios and
environmental conditions. The workshop program consists of a
featured presentation, five regular presentations, and will conclude
with a panel discussion involving all participants to summarize
presented research and to decide future research directions and
collaboration. More information on the workshop is available from

The
41st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-41)
Minitrack: Software Agents and Semantic Web Technology
Co-Chairs: Dr.
Thomas Potok, Mark Elmore, and Dr. Yu (Cathy) Jiao
Location: Big Island, Hawaii
Dates: January 7-10, 2008
The Semantic Web
seeks to extend the World Wide Web from a web for human users into a
web for Software Agents as well, where Software Agents provide
powerful assistance to the human users. Before a ubiquitous and
Software Agent-enabled Semantic Web can be realized, there are a
number of challenging issues in a number of divergent disciplines
that must be solved. How can we better gather, fuse, interpret,
analyze, and visualize information stored on the Web? This Minitrack
seeks to explore novel, multidisciplinary research in these and
other broad issues related to the Semantic Web and applications of
Software Agents.

Location:
Hilton
Hawaiian
Village
,
Honolulu
,
Hawaii
Dates: April 1-5, 2007
In the real world we usually have to deal with the task of searching for an optimal solution in a dynamic environment. Because of the continual change of both the external environment and parameters, the optimum solution will also change with time. In contrast to the static case, the main goal in dynamic optimization problems is no longer to......
